September 11, 2001 Terrorist Attacks The only word that comes to mind is tragedy. These unspeakable terrorist acts happened almost fourteen years ago. Looking down from heaven, I remember the day it happened very vividly. The first plane crashed into the World Trade Center, and I watched in horror as President Bush received a phone call minutes later. As Mr. Bush was on the phone obtaining details about the attacks, I recalled many of the difficult decisions I also had to make as President. information was relayed about how the second plane that had crashed into the Towers. The country believed we were under attack, and no one felt safe. As a former President, I knew that terrorists were responsible for this destruction. Looking back fourteen years later, I cannot bear to think about all of the American lives that were lost that fateful day. I become very depressed knowing that there was nothing I could do to stop this tragedy. God knows the real reason for these attacks, and the fate of the terrorists was in his hands.
NASA Says Goodbye On August 31st, 2011, the NASA space program ended under the Presidency of Barack Obama. I was very emotional over this decision considering I was President when we landed the first man on the moon, and I helped to grow the space program's success. Looking down from heaven, I am filled with sadness knowing that my efforts toward the space program are no more. However, I am well aware of the tragedies in recent years that have occurred with the space program and the lives lost, such as the Columbia space shuttle tragedy in 2003. Our country owes these brave men and women a debt of gratitude. Despite these setbacks and costs of the program, I believe that we should have continued to fund NASA's programs and researched ways to make space travel even safer. There is so much about space that still needs to be discovered for the benefit of our nation and world.
BP Oil Spill The Gulf Oil Spill is recognized as one of the worst oil spills in United States' history. When I was President, we never had a problem like this occur as the our nation's dependence upon oil was much less than what it is today. There should have been better monitoring of the well to prevent the explosion and tragic loss of life. I understand accidents happen, but this tragedy and resultant harm to the gulf shore environment should have been prevented. At the very least, more effort should have been made early on by the Presidency to stop the flow of oil to minimize the environmental impact. I was very overwhelmed by this accident and its long-term effects, many of which are yet unknown. Many animals and fish were killed, and those that survived were found covered in oil. The one positive that came out of this accident was the support given to the families economically impacted by the spill and the intervention by our government to insure that BP took responsibility. As a nation, the United States must continue to hold big business accountable for its actions.
Earthquake in Haiti This is considered another devastating tragedy with significant environmental, human, and economic impacts to the third world country of Haiti. When this natural disaster occurred, I was in shock at how powerful the earthquake was. Thousands of people were killed in the disaster, and many more were trapped under the rubble. Overall, 200,000 people were pronounced dead, and three million more needed medical aid. During my time on Earth and while President, I helped to grow the Peace Corps as a way for the United States to help underdeveloped countries like Haiti, not just during times of turmoil, but all the time. As such, I am a strong believer in the Peace Corps and was grateful to see so many organizations like it provide assistance to the people of Haiti. My aspiration would be for the United States to continue to grow its humanitarian efforts
